Facebook Privacy Policy: You’re Exposed

  1. Anyone can have information about you if they want, including the CIA, lawyers, agents and government agencies

  2. They make a profile of you
    “… collects information about you from other sources, such as newspapers and instant messaging services. This information is gathered regardless of your use of the web site” – Facebook Privacy Policy
  3. They can do whatever they want with your uploads of pictures or any other user content, including selling it to companies and sharing it with others
    “By posting User Content to any part of the Site, you automatically grant, and you represent and warrant that you have the right to grant, to the Company an irrevocable, perpetual, non-exclusive, transferable, fully paid, worldwide license (with the right to sublicense) to use, copy, publicly perform, publicly display, reformat, translate, excerpt (in whole or in part) and distribute such User Content for any purpose, commercial, advertising, or otherwise, on or in connection with the Site or the promotion thereof, to prepare derivative works of, or incorporate into other works, such User Content, and to grant and authorize sublicenses of the foregoing.”- Terms of Use
  4. You can’t delete anything
    “When you update information, we usually keep a backup copy of the prior version for a reasonable period of time to enable reversion to the prior version of that information.” Facebook Privacy Policy
  5. They read and collect all your information
    “When you use Facebook, you may set up your personal profile, form relationships, send messages, perform searches and queries, form groups, set up events, add applications, and transmit information through various channels. We collect this information so that we can provide you the service and offer personalized features.” – Facebook Privacy Policy
  6. Anyone can take a glance at everything about you
    “… we cannot and do not guarantee that user content you post on the site will not be viewed by unauthorized persons. We are not responsible for circumvention of any privacy settings or security measures contained on the site. You understand and acknowledge that, even after removal, copies of user content may remain viewable in cached and archived pages or if other users have copied or stored your user content.” – Facebook Privacy Policy

    The information in this blog is pretty much the exact reason why I use a proxy server to surf the internet. Not directly-related to Facebook, but because these rules apply to a lot of the things someone may check out on the Internet. ISPs and search engines keep track of your IP, and the websites you go to log your IP address. I surf with the a proxy so my real IP is never revealed and neither is a lot of other information that is easily available to be found. This recent
    press release
    discusses some new features for a proxy server that everyone should consider using. Protecting your privacy is not going to be someone else’s responsibility…I learned that the hard way.
